Workshop Description
Explore natural ink-making using plants, flowers, and earth-based materials. In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn how to create your own sustainable, non-toxic inks and experiment with their unique colours and textures. In addition to techniques for extracting, preparing, and preserving natural inks, you'll also learn about pH variation and how to neutralize or shift the tones of your dyes. What you will learn in this workshop: 1. The difference between plant-based natural dyes and mineral pigments 2. How to make natural inks in a range of colours using plants, spices, and vegetables 3. Techniques for preserving your handmade natural inks 4. How adding various natural substances can alter and expand your colour palette 5. Exploration of different surfaces suitable for working with natural inks Materials and supplies that will be provided for participants to use during the workshop: • Earth-based materials such as fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices • Cotton paper • Brushes and palettes • Preservatives • Other (e.g. Mixing bowls and containers) About the instructor: Elmira Sarreshtedari is an artist, art educator, and researcher based in Canada. She holds an MFA from the University of Calgary. Currently, she is pursuing Art Education as a PhD candidate at UBC. Elmira works with different materials and mediums such as drawing, painting, installation art, sound, and video performance to create her art.
